Kerkorian Takes Another Stab at Buying Chrysler
April 9th, 2007Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian announced last week that he would again make a bid to buy Daimler Chrysler for $4.5 billion. With this announcement the shares rose 5%. In 1995 Kerkorian had offered to buy Chrysler for $23 billion before Daimler-Benz acquired them for $37 billion in 1998.
“Kerkorian’s investment company Tracinda told DaimlerChrysler that it would proceed with the transaction if it received an exclusive right to conduct due diligence for 60 days, according to a letter Tracinda sent to the company’s board. The agreement was also contingent on a satisfactory resolution between the United Auto Worker Union and the car manufacturer.
Analysts have estimated that DaimlerChrysler would receive at least $5 billion for Chrysler, but the company has expressed hope of netting $8 billion. Daimler-Benz dished out $37 Billion in 1998 for the mid-level American automaker.”
