Bankruptcy Forces Archdiocese to Make 1 Million in Cutbacks
May 8th, 2006A recent letter sent to members of the Roman Catholic Church in Western Oregon states that the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center will need to make 1 million dollars in cuts due to the bankruptcy of Archdiocese of Portland.
Interestingly, there is a dispute over the source of funding for settlements of abuse cases. It may be that cuts in operations would not be required if some of the churches property was sold.

But in December, the bankruptcy court ruled that the parishes are not separate from the archdiocese and that bankruptcy law allows the elimination of parish and school interest in their real estate. The archdiocese, parishes, parishioners and schools have appealed the decision and arguments are expected in the fall.
Still in the air is the question of whether using parish property for settlements would violate the rights of parishioners or charitable trust law.
