Merciless California Bar Exam Claims Another Well-Known Victim
(December 13th, 2005 under Fun Stuff )
There was an interesting article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal about Kathleen Sullivan, a Constitutional lawyer and former Dean at Stanford Law School, failing the California bar exam. More than half of those who took the June California bar exam with Ms. Sullivan failed. California has the highest failure rate on the bar exam of all 50 states, with more than 75% of its takers failing in the June exam. The July 2005 Texas bar exam had a failure rate of 26%.
Part of the reason for California's low passage rate is because California is one of the few states that allows individuals from correspondence and unaccredited law schools to take the bar exam. Of those first-timers taking the June 2005 California bar exam, only 18% of those individuals from unaccredited law schools, and 37% from correspondence law schools, passed the exam. 45% of those from a California ABA-approved school passed the exam.
Other prominent people who have failed the notoriously tough California bar exam include former California Governor Jerry Brown, who passed on his second attempt, former California Governor Pete Wilson, who passed on his fourth try, and Los Angeles mayor, Antonio R. Villaraigosa, who has yet to pass the California bar exam after failing four times.
